What would you identify as best practices elements?

Ideally, your program (module) should include the following 7 elements :

1-Your role as a leader.
2-Enhancing your emotional intelligence.
3-Leading for high individual performance.
4-Leadership process - vision through deployment.
5-Developing high performance teams.
6-Leading complex projects.
7-Guiding large scale organizational change.

Each module may consist of 5 to 10 components.

What is missing ? Well, I would say, theory is fine, practice is missing..!

Always start with a 360 degree feedback & build the whole program on the perceived weaknesses of the leader(s).

Shelagh this really is a big topic, however my first impresssion is to say each organisation needs to identify what they mean by leadership and the values that underpin it, only then can they put together a leadership development programme that enables them to transcend to that

What is missing is much larger.

The entire paradigm of leadership & management is shifting into something new. Tomorrow's L&M practice will be based on what actually works - which is far afield from prevailing leadership & management theory

Elements of an effective leadership development process:

Vision of desired results vs. current reality
Better habits, tools and insights
An action-results focus
Time-spaced learning

Combined with coaching ‘in the trenches’ that reframes experiences and events.

Warm regards, Phil

A recent article by Henry Mintzberg in the Globe and Mail has a lot to say about North American leadership, and may be a useful contribution to your thinking. He challenges the orthodoxy of the current training of business leaders, and says it much better than I can. You can see it at
